Going Through Lactose Detox

Day 1

February 2, the day we rely on a bitter mammal to forecast how much longer we’ll have to endure mother nature’s latest scheduled seasons. It’s winter and part of winter in the Northeast involves snow and ice.

But thanks to global warming, most of the people here forgot to pay attention when they mentioned that in 6th grade science class.

It’s also Black History month, a time designated to remember the plights of brown people in this country. Since there’s only 28 days in this month I figured this would be a good opportunity to try the 28 days to habit bit once again.

A brief background on this series:
Back in 2010 I was having heart palpitations. Migraines were almost daily and I was angrier throughout the day. While most of the anger came from a daytime situation that shall remain nameless, most of the other physical annoyances were directly tied to my daily consumption of coffee.

In 2008 and 2009 I had the same flare up and while strong espresso 2-3 times a day may be fine some, it was no longer fine for me. So I quit, cold turkey.

They say that it takes 28 days to change a habit. This explains most rehab programs. So I decided to rehabilitate myself against coffee. I started documenting the journey and hope to release it some time later this year.

In any case my last cup of coffee was on October 13, 2010. Since then I’ve sporadically substituted it with Chai Tea Lattes from Starbucks. While I understand the addiction was with caffeine, I correlated my issue with coffee. Baby steps.

In January I attempted to change my bad habit of sleeping late and waking up later. This was thwarted with what was seemed like a cold-turned-bad allergies which knocked me out for a week.

And then catch up took another week and poof, my 6am wake-up calls turned into having only 30 minutes to get ready and rush for the 10am bus.

So here I sit, on February 2, 2011, reflecting on my first day of 28 days to dairy. Yesterday wasn’t so bad. I just had to remember what “non-dairy” items have dairy like corn muffins.

And while it will be challenging to cut out things like cheese, it will be fun to experiment with replacements.

Leaving milk won’t be as hard. Watching Bizarre Foods like the Travel Channel addict that I am, helps me better understand that drinking the milk from a cow is not the most appealing way replenish a thirst.

The next time I want that glass of milk, I just need to picture myself sucking on the tits of a cow and whatever craving I had will surely be gone and replaced with an “ewwwwwwww.”
